Guest of Honor Invitations – Ceremonies & Shows

Bentley as Guest of Honor

AGoH (Artist Guest of Honor), or Featured Guest is a true honor. One does not apply for this position - one is invited. It is a paid speaking engagement wherein the convention covers travel, food and a per diem. There are reciprocal responsibilities as well. Artists are expected to show their work, provide art for the souvenir program book, tee-shirts (if requested), speak, mingle, present slide shows, demonstrate their craft and otherwise be engaging for the convention goers as a headline draw for the event. It is a position I do not take lightly.

  • June 2017 - Featured Guest, at SoonerCon 26

    Open or Close
The theme for SoonerCon 26 (Oklahoma City’s Pop Culture Con) was “Under the Big Top” with Timothy Zahn as the Literary GoH, Peri Charlifu as the AGoH, Jody Lynn Nye as the Writer’s Workshop Clinician, Selina Rosen as the Toastmaster, and Peter Pixe as the Master of Ceremonies. This year was my very first paid position as a Featured Guest, a second tier lineup of guests normally only found at large Media and Pop Culture conventions. There were several notable in the lineup: yours truly, Matt Frank (“Kaiju King” and artist), Todd Haberkorn (LA actor director, producer), Larry Nemecek (Author, actor, host, archivist… all things Star Trek, etc!), and Victoria Price (Vincent Price’s daughter, interior designer). Whew! What a line-up, eh? I am amazed and honored to be included in this group!
I was kept quite busy with a full schedule of panels and so forth… and I even painted a bit for the first time in over a decade. Nonetheless, I also found time to spend with my daughter, Tegan Crum, who was kind enough to come visit for most of the day on Sunday. I had great fun showing her around my world, and introducing her to some of my publishers, such as Yard Dog Press.
This was also kind of a home comming for me, since I was raised in Tulsa, and the original SoonerCon was my second ever convention, back in 1992.
I cannot thank the Committee who invited me enough! I had such a fabulous time, and I wish to especially thank my close friend Lenard Bishop, who served as the committee chair this last year. Thank you all, and all of my fans who came by to visit and pick up a few prints and such. THANK YOU ALL!!
  • Feb. 2016 - FGB* in St. Louis, MO for Conflation 23

    Open or Close
With a theme of “It’s a Mystery” Bentley was the surprise *Famous Guest Being for the 23rd Conflation, in St. Louis. This was a small, adults-only relaxicon, hosted and staffed by a close-nit group of fen, with whom I am long connected.
Not only was this a complete surprise just to be asked, as I had not been in many years, but I was particularly honored for the privilege.
Basically Conflation is a big party, I was treated like a king by all and had a really great time all weekend.
A special shout-out and thanks to the original founding member, Bobbie Wilt and Alesia Clardy for inviting me and showing me what an awesome little con this still is! I met and re-met many friends, new and known.
  • Sept. 2015 - AGoH for FenCon XII, in Dallas, TX

    Open or Close
Program book cover, "Dallas in Flight"
After a dearth of Guest invitations, Bentley was invited to be Artist Guest of Honor for FenCon VII, Sept. 25-27, 2015, in Dallas/Fort Worth. The year's theme was “It’s About Time…” To celebrate that, I took a cue from James Blish’s book, Cities in Flight, and did my version of Dalas in Flight for the program book cover and as a very special Ltd. edition print of 50 for their charity sales.
Not only was I treated to royal hospitality by the entire crew
(an awesome crew of fen runs this con - a special shout out and thanks goes to Tim Miller and the now late Ed Dravecky), but I had a wonderful time seeing old friend from my Texas days.
I was also treated to dinner and great conversation by Teddy Harvia
(AKA David Thayer) and his wife Dianne, as well as an evening with my dear friends Cat Conrad and Roxane (AKA Rachel Caine).
If that wasn’t enough, I got to act & play with the fabulous Yard Dog Road Show
(of Yard Dog Press) and crew!
Other guests were Author Guest of Honor
S.M. Stirling, Music Guest of Honor Tricky Pixie, Fan Guest of Honor Tadao Tomomatsu, Science Guest of Honor Dr. Penny Boston, Special Workshop Gues Jaye Wells and Special Gaming Guest Rick Loomis.
  • Nov. 2010 - AGoH in Philadelphia, PA for Philcon 74

    Open or Close
Philcon program cover, "Oedipus and the Sphinx"
Bentley was AGoH at Philcon 74. This was a major honor, my thanks to all involved with the convention. Our treatment while there was nothing less than professional and excellent.
Philadelphia is thought to be the site of the first official Science Fiction Convention on October 22nd, 1936. This is an unexpected honor to be asked as Artist Guest of Honor at Philcon - one which Bentley deeply appreciates. From Dennis McCunney, "The very first Philcon (and the first SF con, period) took place in the 1930s when a group of New York City fans took the train down to Philadelphia to meet with Philly fans they knew through correspondence and shared membership in the old Science Fiction League begun by Hugo Gernsback in the pages of Amazing Stories and Thrilling Wonder Stories."
Philcon was held at The Crowne Plaza, in Cherry Hill, NJ, this year. That is just 15 minutes by car from Center City, Philadelphia. Bentley had 3 bays of art spanning 2 decades of his work. There was also plenty of prints in the print shop for collectors with tighter budgets. Other Guests of Honor were Peter S. Beagle and Jeff Mach.
There was be two different images for the program book and the Tee Shirt. The program book cover was the Bentley piece
"Oedipus and the Sphinx" (pictured here - the canvas sold at the show, but prints are available). The Tee shirt was based on the ever-popular Rockit Girl done originally for Room Con and is available from the fantastic folks at Off World Designs.
  • July 2010 - AGoH for OSFest 3 in Omaha, NE

    Open or Close
OSFesT program book cover, "Visual Check"
Bentley was Artist Guest of Honor at OSFest 3 (Omaha Science Fiction and Fantasy Festival), July 23-25, 2010. This year's theme was "The World Created by You." Aside from Bentley's work in the art show, AFS had a dealers table with loads of stuff from prints to magnets and books with covers done by Mitch from Yard Dog and Sam's Dot.
Other guests were Author Guest of Honor
Robert J. Sawyer, Science Guest of Honor Arthur Bozlee, Anime Guest of Honor Jan Scott-Frazier, Toastmaster Rusty Havelin and Masquerade MC Denny Lynch. B1B also prepared a special brew for the convention. They even had a special root beer ready for the con suite, and it was great!
Aside from being treated very well
(we actually had our very own minion! Hi Nick - thanks for taking care of us) we had a wonderful and fantastic time. Jimmy also branched out and had the first ever Room Con not at ConQuesT with Room Con 6.2, featuring the now infamous Bad Touch Monkey as Fan Guest of Honor. But that wasn't all - there was a super fantastic Nerdtron Dance that brought in 300 some odd people with lots of cosplay and great music... sweet!
  • May 2010 - AGoH at Room Con in Kansas City, MO

    Open or Close
RoomCon program book cover, "Alive and Well on Ganymede"
Woo-Hoo! Bentley was the AGoH at the one and only Room Con 6, the "con-in-a-room" con (a con within a con), at ConQuesT 41 (PRIME!), in Kansas City, MO. What an excuse to bring an artist back home to the Mid-West, eh?
Other guests included the most amazing Bland Lemon Denton as Music Guest of Honor, the "sometimes obscure or elliptical" Howard Waldrop as Writer Guest of Honor, the loveable and infamous actress Sue Sinor as Fan Guest of Honor and the outrageously unflappable Jim "Dr. Paisley" Murray as Toastmaster... maybe that should be "Reverend Doctor Paisley?" Additionally the band members were the incomperable Bland Lemon Denton, the multi-talented David Lee Anderson and the bluesbro-esque Dennis Drew.
This was a funtastic evening of non-stop music and fannish mayhem the likes of which I have never before witnessed!
    Room Con was held at
ConQuesT 41 "Steam Punk and Evil Geniuses", May 28-30, 2010, Memorial Day Weekend, at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center, Kansas City MO.

  • Jan. 2010 - Special Guest at Gamers Of Winter in HBG., PA

    Open or Close
    Gamers of Winter flyer, 2010
Once again, Bentley is a Special Guest and friend of the local gaming convention, Gamers of Winter Con, 2010. AFS will be there with books from Sam's Dot Publishing and of course a variety of Bentley art as limited edition prints, magnets, bookmarks and small framable pieces sure to fit in those small places that need something eye catching...
This year GoW has two Special Guests - Mitch Bentley (yours truly of AFS) and Ken Burnside of
Ad Astra Games. Ad Astra is known for their game systems and miniatures such as Honor Harrington and Birds of Prey to name just a few.
    Additionally, author
C.J. Henderson will be there with lots of great stuff! He has written for dozens of magazines, writes both fiction and non-fiction works and has published several serials such as Jack Hagee P.I. series, Teddy London occult detective series and his newest Piers Knight supernatural investigator series.
  • Nov. 2009 - AGoH for Astronomicon in Rochester, NY

    Open or Close
Program book cover, "Escape from Orion"
Bentley was Astronomicon's Artist Guest of Honor in Rochester, N.Y., November 6th - 8th, 2009. This was be the 11th annual Astronomicon, hosted by the Rochester Fantasy Fans. Other GoHs were Mike Resnick as Writer Guest and Paul (Crazy Igor) Meyer as Fan Guest. The program book is pictured at right. Astronomicon is classified as a "relaxicon."
This was a great honor for Bentley, who has sold well via mail-in art to Astronomicon throughout the 1990s. Astronomicon has long lived up to its name by being an excellent place to find some of the top astronomical and science fiction art from artists around the country. Moreover, to be paired as GoH with an iconic name such as Mike Resnick is truly an honor.
Atomic Fly Studios ran a table in the dealers room this year, with lots of goodies from books Mitch has illustrated the covers for, to prints and DVDs. Despite the economy sales were pretty good.
  • Feb. 2009 - AGoH and Media Guest in Harrisburg, PA.

    Open or Close
Gamers of Winter Con flyer, 2009
Bentley was not only Artist Guest of honor, but also the Media Guest of Honor at Gamers of Winter Con in Harrisburg, PA on February 14th - 16th, 2009 over the extended Valentines and President's Day weekend. There was no program book for this first time convention, which was a local event for Bentley.
Bentley's media connection is both the film Dark Operations and the film Some Kind of Justice; locally made independent films. Bentley provided the artwork for the films as well as this con and though small, a good time was had by those who attended. Many door prizes were given away (including Bentley mini-prints) and lots of gaming demos were played.
Unfortunately, this small event had to be delayed from its originally scheduled date in January during MLK weekend, due to a conflict in the church's schedule, where the event was held. Perhaps next year will see a better turnout.
  • May 2008 - AGoH for DemiCon in Des Moines, IA.

    Open or Close
    DemiCon program book cover
Bentley was the Artist Guest of Honor at DemiCon 19, in Des Moines, IA the weekend of May 2-4, 2008. The cover art Bentley made for the convention is pictured here at right. Other GoHs were Steven Barnes, Writer Guest; Joe & Inger Meyers, as Fan Guests (yes, the famous "Inger Cookies" Inger Meyers); Rusty Havelin as Toastmaster Emeritus and Tadao Tomomatsu as Toastmaster... what a line-up!
It had been several years since Bentley was at DemiCon. Both Cathie and Mitch had a fabulous time celebrating Mitch's 50th birthday. 300 plus loyal fans, no make that friends, sang the birthday song and made Mitch cry. That was just mean... not really! You guys, shucks. Where's my tissues...?
The Des Moines crowd of fans has always been a wonderful group and always puts on an exciting and humorous play by the Trans Iowa Canal Company. Bentley was quite honored by their interpretive performance of "Man of La Mancha," which featured (among others) one bozo-flake artist formerly of the Oklahoma contingent... well this year they out-did themselves! In a marvelous production of "Harry Potted and the Deadly Stenches" they made Mitch a last-minute hero (after he got his coffee, of course, he is just mean and nasty without his coffee...) and a parcel brush (well duh... creates his own reality... an artist... a legend in his own mind... my aren't the violets lovely... get it?)! Wow, a hero. Y'all are too much... no, really. Great fun was had by all. I just want to know when it will be released on DVD?
  • May 2006 - AGoH for ConQuesT in Kansas City, MO.

    Open or Close
ConQuesT program book cover, "I Scream Man"
Mitch was Artist Guest of Honor at Conquest 37 in Kansas City, MO, over Memorial Day weekend, May 26-28th, 2006.
We had a great time and much fun was had by all! Their co-chairs this year were Ben Thomas & Sherri Dean, and the theme was "In Space, no one can hear you scream... for Ice Cream!" and for this crowd, that was all it took! Talk about "Take it and run with it..." WOW! Ice Cream socials, Ice Cream Wars... well, just look at the cover we did for them and you will get the idea...
We have attended Conquest as a regular for many years and it remains one of our all-time favorites. Thanks to everyone in Kansas City, you all really know how to throw a convention! Mitch gave a presentation from his Masters Thesis on a historical overview of Astronomical Art through the ages and a discussion on Photoshop techniques. He also served as auctioneer for both the Art Auction and the Charity Auction.
A special thanks to Cheryl Russell, who ran a great art show and of course, her entire crew of volunteers... and especially my friend and client, Dr. Jean Stuntz, who always lends a hand. Your painting is in progress and will be on its way for Conquest 2007! See you there...
  • Feb. 2006 - AGoH at VisionCon in Springfield, MO

    Open or Close
VisionCon program book cover, "Once on a Blue Moon"
Mitch was Artist Guest of Honor at VisionCon 2006 in Springfield, MO, on the weekend of Feb. 17-19. We had a great time and want to thank Joyce Reedy and David as well a slew of other great folks for a wonderful convention.
VisionCon is a family oriented, SF/F&Gaming convention that has been running for just over two decades and we highly recommend this one for everyone. The con-com and staff are wonderful and efficient. Mitch gave a presentation on Photoshop and his art, served as auctioneer and even won the Best Science Fiction award in the art show. Our thanks to Aaron Woody, who ran the art show, and all of the volunteers who helped.
We would also like to thank Christopher Allen who saw to it that there was a significant amount of newspaper coverage... Mitch's piece Ethereal Beach II was featured on the cover of the Springfield News-Leader as both a teaser at the top, and as the front page cover for their Weekend Magazine section.
